A first attempt at a provenance study in the Jadar block (Serbia) by means of U-Pb zircon geochronology

U-Pb geochronology of zircon grains retrieved from magmatic rocks intruding the Jadar block terrane in central Balkans is used here to add new constraints on accretion processes and provenance crustal sources this potentially exotic block. Using an unorthodox approach, we analyzed zircons extracted products Cenozoic (Cer Boranja granitoid massifs) Triassic magmatism (Bobija andesitic tuff - Pietra Verde). In fourteen samples granites epiclastites, about 600 grains, these, 30-40% were derived basement further for geological interpretation. Most show a similar Precambrian Paleozoic age spectrum, including ubiquitous Neoproterozoic well-defined Silurian-Ordovician populations. Only few older are present, composing minor populations at c. 1.2 Ga 3.2 Ga. The younger represent population that strongest all samples. This most likely associated with local Permo-Triassic generated due opening Neotethys. contrast Bobija, spectrum Cer polyphase pluton shows strong Carboniferous peak, indicating important link Variscan margin Eurasia. supports opposing interpretations either part represents southern continuation ?Bukkium? Sana-Una terranes comprising displaced fragments European foreland, or, more likely, it has Adria affinity these Cretaceous sediments Sava Zone, i.e., suture separates Adriatic domains, which assimilated during intrusion granitic magmas.
